Caterpillar recently introduced its new RM600 and RM800 high-end road recyclers for full-depth reclamation and soil stabilization. Both all-wheel drive units have a 96-inch (2.44-meter) cutting width and can work up to 20 in. (508 millimeters) deep.

The Cat RM600 and RM800 have a new four-post, adjustable-height design for greater stability and cutting precision. The manufacturer created them to size material optimally and produce homogeneous mixes. The machines can also cut across slopes and cut flush along one side.

    New Alloy System K Rotor

The front-to-rear weight distribution of the RM600 and RM800 provides the stability to make difficult cuts simple, Cat says. The machines have four height-adjustable legs that offer up to + or - 12.5% (8 degrees) of slope on either side.

The reclaimers utilize a new, abrasion-resistant System K rotor and other rotor system components from Caterpillar’s cold planer line. They use a fastener-free, dual-taper toolholder and base block components. The rotor can be equipped with bolt-on paddle protection for the toolholder for full-depth recycling projects, or with wedge protection to minimize drag during soil stabilization.

Cat makes rotor bit changes easier with a machine lock-out mode that allows the engine to power the standard compressed air system, which is capable of powering pneumatic tools. Workers can change end ring bits without having to reach inside the rotor chamber.

The belt-driven rotor drive of the RM600 and RM800 has bi-directional cutting capability and an adjustment-free hydraulic clutch. Its exit and return-to-cut functions assure a consistent cutting depth while speeding up and simplifying operation.

The operator can immediately adjust the material gradation using the front and rear mixing chamber doors, which come with standard cameras above them. The rear rotor chamber door offers a float feature that allows the user to manage the down pressure.

    More Power To The Pavement

The Cat RM600 and RM800 use a turbocharged Tier 4 Final, EU Stage V Cat C18 engine with one electronic control module (ECM). The big diesel motor produces 636 horsepower (474 kilowatts) in the RM600 and 762 HP (568 kW) in the RM800. This makes the RM600 up to 17% more powerful than Caterpillar’s RM500B model, and the RM800 up to 42% stronger than the RM500B. The road reclaimers’ service intervals are 500 hours for their engine oil, 6,000 hours for hydraulic oil, and 12,000 hours for coolant replacement. The cooling fans for the heat exchangers automatically reverse periodically to clean out dust.

The operator can hydraulically slide the cab of the RM600 or RM800 to either side for visibility to the front and sides of the recycler. A small handwheel guides the machine in four available steering modes. The Caterpillar models have an inside turning radius of just 3.1 m (10.1 ft), facilitated by wheels mounted at the corners of their chassis.

Inside the reclaimers’ cabin are large, 10-in. color touchscreen displays with built-in diagnostics features. Caterpillar groups the recyclers’ controls by function for ease of use. The machines include standard front and rear cameras, with side-mount cameras available as options.

Also available for the new soil stabilizers are spray systems for water and bitumen emulsions. The operator can control the additive flow and adjust the spray width from inside the cabin.

The RM600 and RM800 come with Product Link telematics as standard, which supports Cat Remote Services for diagnostics and software updates.
