Volvo Construction Equipment plans to highlight a pair of new, compact diesel excavators for the North American market at the American Rental Association (ARA) Show in New Orleans, Louisiana, from February 18 to 21. The new 3.9-ton (3.5-metric-ton) Volvo EC37 and the 4.4-t (4-mt), short-swing radius ECR40 offer better stability, 10% increased fuel economy, operator comfort features, and easier maintenance, according to the manufacturer. Both models are scheduled for availability this quarter.

“The 3- to 4-[metric] ton size makes up more than a quarter of the compact excavator market in North America, and we’re excited to refresh our offering in that range,” says Darren Ashton, Volvo CE product manager, compact equipment. “I think our customers will be very happy with the improvements we’ve made based on their feedback.”

Stop The Rock With The Volvo EC37 & ECR40

The new Volvo EC37 and ECR40 minis replace the Volvo EC35D, ECR35D, and ECR40D models. The EC37 and ECR40 share a chassis with a new, elongated undercarriage for an extended contact patch between the tracks and the ground. This alters the center of gravity for the better, improving stability and reducing the “rocking chair” motion common to some other models of mini excavators. For simpler fleet maintenance, the EC37 and ECR40 share counterweights with Volvo’s ECR50 and ECR58 excavator models.

The new EC37 and ECR40 have a roomy, quiet cab with a rollover protection system (ROPS) and great sightlines through the excavators’ large, flat windows and around their thin corner pillars. A larger door opening and a tiltable console make for easier boarding and exit. The machines’ armrest and controls move with the seat, and their travel pedals are enlarged to accommodate additional seating positions. The cabin also offers USB ports and space for a cool box.

The operator can set up the excavators’ hydraulic functions and attachments via a new 5-inch color display, which has an automotive-type jog wheel for easy navigation. The customizable hydraulics flow and work modes allow multiple operators to return to their preferred settings for various applications.

“The load-sensing hydraulics are definitely a highlight,” says Ashton. “The way the controls are set up and the smooth movements are just outstanding, and it all works together for better fuel efficiency.”

The Volvo EC37 & ECR40: Power Meets Fuel Efficiency

The 10% better fuel economy of the new Volvo EC37 and ECR40 is due in part to features such as automatic engine idling and auto engine shutdown, during which time not worked is not logged on the hours meter. The excavators also offer an Eco mode for their 25-horsepower (18.5-kilowatt) Volvo D1.7A diesel engine, which requires no diesel particulate filter (DPF).

Both new mini excavators can apply a breakout force of 7,980 pounds-force (35.5 kilonewtons) and a tearout force of up to 5,080 lbf (22.6 kN) with a short arm. The EC37 has an operating weight of 8,344 pounds (3,785 kilograms) and a bucket capacity of 0.149 cubic yards (0.114 cubic meters). The short-swing radius ECR40 weighs 8,785 lbs (3,985 kN) and has a 0.193-cu yd (0.148-cu m) bucket. Options for the EC37 and ECR40 include a float blade and LED work lights.
