Volvo Construction Equipment will divest its North American Blaw-Knox paver business to asphalt plant manufacturer Gencor Industries in a deal to be consummated in Q4 of 2020. Volvo CE currently manufactures asphalt pavers under the Blaw-Knox brand at a facility in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. Gencor plans to move the production line a short distance to Letterkenny Township, PA.

“Gencor is a strong player to take on the Blaw-Knox paver range, as it has extensive expertise in the asphalt industry and a good reputation for quality and customer success,” says Volvo CE President Melker Jernberg. “We see this agreement as being a win-win for us and Gencor. It maintains a valuable product offer to Volvo CE customers, as well as securing dealer distribution and servicing of Blaw-Knox branded paver products in North America.” Certain Volvo dealerships will continue to market and service the brand for Gencor.

“With our already strong position in the asphalt industry, this acquisition will afford Gencor access to the venerable brand of Blaw-Knox, and provide an entry into the hot mix paver segment,” says Gencor Industries President & Director Marc G. Elliott. “We are committed to the long-term growth and development of the Blaw-Knox brand.”

    History

Blaw-Knox was born July 6, 1917 as a merger of steel fabrication companies founded by Jacob B. Blaw and Luther Knox (along with Irvin F. Lehman). The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, company began building road paving machinery in 1929, when it acquired A. W. French & Company, manufacturer of the Ord line of concrete finishers. Interestingly, Blaw-Knox also became known for making diamond-profile radio towers in 1927, as well as hulls, turrets, and gun shields for M-60 military tanks starting in 1943. It was acquired by Volvo CE in 2007.

    Current Products

Volvo CE currently manufactures Blaw-Knox pavers with 18- and 26-foot (5.5- and 7.9-meter) maximum paving widths and high operator visibility. These include the P5170B and P7170B wheeled models and the P4410B, P5110B, and P7110B tracked units.
