VÖGELE’s New SB 300 Fixed-Width Screed Paves Very Wide German Road Without Joints
The new SB 300 fixed-width screed from paver manufacturer VÖGELE showed its mettle on a broad, new thoroughfare in Hamburg, Germany. Contractor Kemna Bau needed to pave the 34.4- to 41-foot (10.5- to 12.5-meter)-wide road without joints and with maximum flatness. The firm selected the SB 300 screed which, even with extensions added to its width, has the structural integrity to do the job.
“The new screed is very rigid,” says Kemna Bau construction manager Martin Iske. “The immaculate evenness makes this clear.”
Seamless Strasse
The project involved the creation of a new section of the B75 motorway called the “Wilhelmsburger Reichsstrasse.” The road required the use of complex materials such as porous asphalt for noise reduction in one section and stone mastic asphalt for durability in another.
Kemna Bau mounted the SB 300 screed on a VÖGELE SUPER 2100-3i “Dash 3” tracked paver. To get the screed to float correctly and compact the layers the correct amount, its hydraulic tamper stroke can be adjusted at the push of a button from 0.16 inches (4 millimeters) for thin binder and wearing courses to 0.32 in. (8 mm) for thicker base courses. The results were impressive, by all accounts.
The VÖGELE SB 300
The SB 300 screed has an innovative, new bolt-on extension feature. The hydraulically adjustable extensions come in various lengths to give the 9.8-ft. (3-m) screed a width of up to 52.5 ft (16 m) as needed. When used with a SUPER 2100-3i paver, as in the Hamburg project, the SB 300 can lay asphalt pavement of up to 42.7 ft. (13 m) wide.
The SB 300’s big brother, the SB 350, can pave up to 59 ft (18 m) in width using similar extensions. A helpful guide and positioning system allow users to make sure the extensions are mounted properly for a flat surface.
“The new variability is another feature to highlight,” says Iske. “Paving without joints would have been impossible without it.”
The SB 300 also features a new electric heating system. VÖGELE reports that it raises the screed to its operating temperature more quickly and evenly than the heater used in previous models.
