A Wirtgen SP 62i inset slipform paver recently helped to create a new stretch of road near College Station, Texas. Larry Young Paving, Inc. used the paver to lay down the concrete road on the site of the old Texas World Speedway to support the upcoming Southern Pointe residential area.

“All of our employees are very familiar with the paver’s operation and feel comfortable working with it,” says Operations Manager Mark Schinzler.

    Smooth Results

The Southern Pointe project is expected to require more than 818,000 square feet (76,000 square meters) of road. The 1-square-mile (2.6-square-kilometer) residential development will be constructed over the course of the next 12 years.

Larry Young Paving used the Wirtgen SP 62i to lay a 7.9-inch (200-millimeter)-thick layer of concrete on top of a lime-stabilized sub-base. In two passes, the inset paver created a section of road 2,200 feet (670 meters) long and 37.7 ft (11.5 m) wide with a crown of 3%.

Wirtgen says the paver’s intelligent steering and control system contributes to its smooth operation. The contractor touts the SP 62i’s quietness and automatic super smoother feature. “It’s amazing how the super smoother eliminates unevenness,” says Schinzler.

Wirtgen’s customer support has been another boon, according to Schinzler. “The support we receive when we have technical and operational questions is fantastic,” he says. “Their employees are always there for us, 24 hours a day.”

A Look At The SP 62i

The Wirtgen SP 62i is a compact inset paver that can place concrete up to 18 in. (450 mm) thick and from 12 to 24 ft (3.50 to 7.50 m) wide. The machine can pave at up to 20 feet (6.1 meters) per minute and travel at up to 59 ft/min (18 m/min) on its two crawler tracks. Its height is mechanically adjustable up to 16 in (406 mm).

The SP 62i’s powerplant is a 241-horsepower (180-kilowatt), 6.1-liter engine that meets EPA Tier 4 Final and EU Stage IV emissions standards. Its operating weight ranges from 52,910 to 74,957 pounds (24,000 to 34,000 kilograms).
