Wirtgen’s KMA 240(i) Cold Recycling Mixing Plant Turns Old Asphalt Into New Pavement
Wirtgen’s KMA 240(i) is a portable, laboratory-scale, cold recycling and mixing plant for asphalt. The precision mix and cold mix it produces can be used immediately to pave new highways, roads, paths, and parking lots.
The KMA 240(i) builds on the features of Wirtgen’s earlier KMA 220(i) model with better mixing performance and a cement metering system that self-calibrates automatically through static weighing. And because it can turn milled and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) into new roads, the plant saves energy, lowers building costs, and emits far less carbon dioxide than the production of new, virgin asphalt.
Precise Production
The KMA 240(i) can create up to 265 tons (240 metric tons) of recycled mix per hour, which works out to a full 22-t (20-mt) truckload every five minutes. Looked at another way, it can supply the material for a cement-treated or bituminous-bound base layer 13 feet (4 meters) wide, 5.9 inches (150 mm) thick, and 4,600 ft (1,400 m) long in a single work day.
The plant’s continuous mixer can process a broad variety of recycled or virgin, non-cohesive base materials. Binding agents such as hot bitumen, bitumen emulsion, and cement can be injected into the mix with precise microprocessor control. The Wirtgen plant can produce cement-treated base layers (CTB), roller-compacted concrete (RCC), and bituminous-bound base layers with either emulsion or foamed bitumen.
Goes Where The Jobs Are
The 70,217-pound (31,850-kilogram) KMA 240(i) is mounted on a flatbed semitrailer for use onsite or in a plant. The twin-shaft pugmill has its own Tier 4 Final/EU Stage V diesel power unit for standalone operation. The 173-horsepower (129-kilowatt), six-cylinder engine is housed in a sound-insulated enclosure. It can run for up to two days on one tankful of fuel, according to Wirtgen.
The manufacturer says that setting up the KMA 240(i) is easy thanks to its quick-connect couplers and hydraulic components. The plant’s swivel-mounted discharge conveyor can swing 55 degrees to either side.
The plant’s sole operator can appreciate its air-conditioned, ergonomically designed cabin. An LED light pole and other work lights support operation before dawn, after dusk, or around the clock.
