VÖGELE SUPER 1303-3i Pavers Lay Down Hairpin Curves On RiMO Germany’s Go-Kart Testing Track
Manufacturer RiMO Germany is rightly famous for the performance and quality of its electric-, gasoline-, and LPG-powered go-karts. And when the company needed a twisting, turning, and perfectly surfaced testing track built next to its new headquarters in the town of Hemer in Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia region, it turned to a contractor using VÖGELE SUPER 1303-3i Compact Class wheeled asphalt pavers.
“It was impressive to see how smoothly the VÖGELE pavers took the bends,” says Project Manager Dominik Twer. When RiMO isn’t testing its electric go-karts, the company is expected to allow local residents to use the track.
Tortuous Turns
Roadbuilding contractor Ossenberg Aufbereitung selected the VÖGELE SUPER 1303-3i pavers not only for their ability to lay down an amazingly flat surface, but also for their wheeled 6x4 undercarriage and Pivot Steer function, which were crucial in the creation of the track’s seven hairpin bends. Pivot Steer is a steering brake that automatically brakes the rear wheel via hydraulics during tight turns to decrease the radius of the curve. The SUPER 1303-3i pavers ride on two pneumatic rear tires and four front wheels mounted on bogies.
The plan for the go-kart track called for it to be exactly 1,284 feet (391.49 meters) long with one chicane and a width that varies from 17 to 31 ft (5.2 to 9.5 m). Moreover, the curves are banked with a crossfall, or transfer slope, of up to 20%.
The two SUPER 1303-3i pavers laid the asphalt “hot to hot” to ensure a good bond between layers. A VÖGELE SUPER 1803-2 Universal Class paver assisted the two Compact Class machines on the widest portions of the circuit. A VÖGELE MT 3000-2i Offset material feeder fed the pavers from a stationary location by the entrance, while wheel loaders brought hot mix to the machines at other parts of the track.
The VÖGELE SUPER 1303-3i
VÖGELE’s SUPER 1303-3i paver has a basic width of 6 feet, 1 inch (1.85 m). When paired with the AB 340 extending screed, it can pave surfaces up to 14 ft, 9 in (4.5 m) wide. The SUPER 1303-3i produces a top-quality surface with a high degree of evenness. It can pave up to 98 ft (30 m) per minute with a laydown rate of 276 tons (250 metric tons) per hour.
The SUPER 1303-3i makes use of several productive VÖGELE technologies. The PaveDock Assistant is a communication system between the operators of the paver and feed vehicle. The paver’s ErgoPlus 3 operating system allows visibility on all crucial areas of operation.
VÖGELE’s AutoSet Basic feature speeds up the process when the SUPER 1303-3i needs to stop paving and move to a different part of the work site. One button press raises the augers, the front of the hopper, and the front deflectors while moving the screed into transport position. When the paver reaches its destination, a push of the same button moves each component back into operating position. The SUPER 1303-3i can travel at up to 12 mph (20 km/h).
A 99.8-horsepower (74.4-kilowatt) Deutz liquid-cooled 4-cylinder diesel engine powers the SUPER 1303-3i paver. Its exhaust aftertreatment system incorporates a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), a diesel particulate filter (DPF), and selective catalytic reduction (SCR).
