Wirtgen W 100 Fi Compact Milling Machine Renovates Narrow Bike Trail In Western Germany
The compact size of Wirtgen’s W 100 Fi cold planer made it a natural choice when an asphalt bike path near Aachen, Germany, had to be rehabilitated. The bike path, with a width of less than 6.6 feet (2 meters), lay on a narrow verge alongside a roadway. In this confined work area, the cold planer’s 3.28-ft (1-m)-wide milling drum removed the asphalt in just two passes, working right up to the hedge lining the side of the path.
Deere-Powered
The Wirtgen W 100 Fi uses a new six-cylinder diesel engine that has been specifically tailored for milling machine use. The new motor, made by parent company John Deere, has the torque to mill asphalt to a depth of 13 inches (330 millimeters) with low fuel consumption.
The W 100 Fi provides the operator with visibility in front of the milling drum, which is mounted on the right rear of the machine. With this vantage point, the operator is able to mill up to and around obstacles and buildings. The operator’s platform can shift to the side and its roof can move out of the path of objects such as lamp posts.
The large steering angle of the Wirtgen W 100 Fi makes it highly maneuverable. Its discharge conveyor has a broad slewing angle of 65 degrees to each side, along with a semi-automatic slewing angle control system that can keep the conveyor aligned with a haul truck as the milling machine steers around obstacles. The truck can drive in front of the W 100 Fi and in the direction of its travel as it accepts offloaded material from the conveyor.
Level Results
Wirtgen now offers a new, pressurized cabin option for the W 100 F(i) and other members of Wirtgen’s F Series of compact planers. Its 345-horsepower (257-kilowatt) John Deere diesel engine meets Tier 4 Final and EU Stage V emissions standards. The machine has an operating weight of 46,077 pounds (20,900 kilograms).
The W 100 F(i) is easy to transport and service, according to its manufacturer. It can mill asphalt at up to 1.6 mph (2.6 km/h), and it can travel on its tracks at up to 3.6 mph (5.8 km/h).
The planer’s Mill Assist machine control system can automatically adjust the engine and milling drum speeds, the machine’s advance speed, the water spraying system, and more in order to find the sweet spot between performance and expense. Wirtgen’s Level Pro Plus feature automatically levels the milled surface the W 100 F(i) leaves behind.
