New Electro Thermo Controlled Screeds Make Volvo’s Large Tracked Pavers Even More Productive
Volvo Construction Equipment says its new electrically heated fixed screeds increase efficiency and productivity while producing high-quality road finishes. The new MB122 and VTD121 Electro Thermo Controlled fixed screeds are powered by a 55-kilovolt-ampere generator, eliminating the need to periodically refill the gas bottles used by gas-heated screeds. Volvo says the heating function also lets operators get started faster—in as little as 40 minutes--and offers automatic temperature adjustment based on the data from individual temperature sensors in each section.
Compatibility
The new MB122 and VTD121 Electro Thermo Controlled fixed screeds can be equipped on Volvo’s P6820D ABG, P7820D ABG, and P8820D ABG large tracked pavers. Working widths on these large-scale pavers range from 8.2 to 42.7 feet (2.5 to 13 meters); Volvo designed them to lay everything from hot asphalt to compacted concrete and cement-bound materials.
Additional Capabilities
To further reduce downtime, Volvo’s MB122 and VTD121 fixed screeds include an on-board diagnostic function that checks each heating bar’s condition and indicates when a replacement is needed. Volvo says the hydraulic connecting points and electric connections are easy to access. To improve flexibility on the jobsite, the fixed screeds allow crown adjustment from +4% to -2%, and can use Volvo’s Vario extensions to add 2.4 ft (0.75 m) on each side to adapt to irregular edges.
Compaction With Fixed Vibratory Screeds
Volvo says its fixed vibratory screeds with double tampers produce a 5% to 7% higher degree of compaction when paving thick layers than a single tamper. The new fixed screeds can achieve a 98% Marshall density, which reduces the amount of rolling work and associated costs down the line.
