    About Carlson

Carlson Paving Products of Tacoma, Washington, manufactures asphalt paving equipment for every job from driveways to city streets to interstate highways. Initially famous for its variable-width screeds, it also produces heavy-duty asphalt pavers, fixed-width screeds, and paving accessories. Carlson is an Astec Industries company.

    History

    Carlson CP130 Asphalt Paver

Carlson’s story dates back to 1982, when James Carlson developed the EZII front-mounted hydraulic power extensions. They could be mounted to most fixed-width screeds of any brand, and they made a big impression with their rigid, simple efficiency and narrow extension plate. The extensions maintained mat quality and raised the bar on variable-width performance. Carlson Paving Products was founded in 1986 to build screeds for the paving industry.

The company was acquired by Astec Industries of Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 2000, and began to serve the North American and Australian roadbuilding markets. Carlson’s first commercial-class paver, the CP90, hit the market in 2008 with technology borrowed from fellow Astec company Roadtec. The CP90 was an 84-horsepower (62.6-kilowatt), 8-foot (2.4-meter) machine that was extendable to 15-foot (4.6-meter) paving widths. The rubber-tracked machine weighed 18,800 pounds (8,528 kilograms) and featured an electrically heated screed unlike the diesel flame-heated models of the time.

Carlson’s sales doubled in the years between 2012 and 2017. In the latter year, the manufacturer released three new models in the commercial paver category, namely the CP85, CP100 II, and CP130.

    Products

Carlson’s Commercial Class asphalt pavers are all tracked models with the exceptions of the CP60 and CP65 Wheeled City Pavers. Hallmarks of the line include heavy-duty undercarriages and long-lasting, rebuildable components. The pavers come with 74-, 100-, and 130-horsepower (55-, 74-, 97-kilowatt) engines and can lay pavement up to 8 inches (203 millimeters) thick. Carlson claims a few exclusive features such as armrest-mounted controls and damper doors that open horizontally to avoid damage from obstacles when they’re open. Its pavers even have cup holders and other amenities for the crew. The company also makes export-compliant platforms such as the CP130i suitable for Australia, Central and South America, and elsewhere around the world.

Carlson’s Highway Class Asphalt Screeds include seven platforms in front-mount, rear-mount, and fixed-width form. Known for their high mat quality, the screeds and their extensions can provide pave widths of 8 to 30 feet (2.4 to 9.1 meters). The Carlson EZIII, EZV, EZR2, and the award-winning EZIV are mountable on practically any highway-class paver used in North America and Australia, the company says.

    Accessories

Using experience gained over the decades, Carlson makes accessories for better paving any time, day or night. Its pole mount LED Blade Light can provide non-glare illumination for any machine. The high-output, directional light source can run on either AC or DC power, and it doesn’t attract insects, Carlson says.

Most screeds in use in North America can be fitted with the endgate-mounted Carlson Safety Edge, which bevels roadway edges to thirty degrees to avoid an abrupt drop-off at the pavement’s edge. In a similar vein, Carlson’s Tapered Notch attachment smooths out the transition between old and new pavement in construction zones.

Meanwhile, Carlson-branded screeds can use Joint Density Attachments to enhance density levels at the longitudinal joint. A bolt-on attachment and a sideload attachment work together to compact the joint so that it can be rolled to maximum density.
