    About Crack Sealers

Crack sealers, also known as asphalt, tar, or melting kettles or simply “melters,” are designed to fill cracks in paved surfaces and prevent dirt, rocks, sand, and water from entering them. These machines are used all times of year, but are particularly important in fall and winter where water can get into cracks during the day, freeze and expand at night, potentially causing larger issues.

    Marathon KERA150BRE Crack Sealer

Crack sealers typically use diesel or propane to heat up the filling material and then pour it into the crack where it quickly hardens. The type of sealant used varies, but two of the most common are rubberized asphalt and silicone, which are durable enough to stand up to traffic and flexible enough to adapt to changing temperatures and weather conditions without cracking or falling apart.

    Types Of Crack Sealers

Available in towable and walk-behind configurations, crack sealers use various methods to apply sealant, but the two most common are gravity or hose. Gravity models feature a dispensing valve that pours sealant directly down into the crack without any other delivery mechanism. While ideal for large sealing jobs, they lack the precision you get from a hose and wand combination.

For filling smaller cracks or ones that require detailed work, there are hose-based crack sealers that are similar to a gravity model, but include a hose and a wand where a worker can more accurately apply sealant to avoid waste. A pump pushes the sealant to the hose/wand mechanism, which is heated to ensure that the filler material doesn’t seize up during application.

The M-Series No Pump from Cimline is one example of a towable gravity crack sealer. It has a maximum capacity of between 150 and 230 gallons (568 and 871 liters) and is ideal for filling asphalt cracks in parking lots at less than 6,000 to 7,000 linear feet (1,829 to 2,134 meters) per day. SealMaster is another popular manufacturer of crack sealers, and provides the Crack Pro range of towable gravity flow melters and heated hose machines.

Marathon sells a range of crack sealers that includes the KERA10 walk-behind, which features a 3/4-inch material valve with handlebar controls. The KERA10 is well-suited for smaller contractor jobs. Also in that range is the KERA145HD with a heated hose system and the KERA150BRE with an electrically heated hose system; both are towable models available in diesel or propane configurations with capacities of 145, 250, and 400 gal (550, 946, and 1,514 l).
