    About Towable Crack Sealers

Crack sealers, which are also commonly referred to as “asphalt kettles,” “tar kettles,” “melting kettles,” or “melters,” fill cracks in paved surfaces with a sealant to prevent water, dirt, sand, and other debris from getting inside. Although they are used year-round, these machines work hardest in the fall and winter when variable temperatures may allow water to enter pavement cracks, freeze overnight, and expand to potentially widen cracks and cause a larger issue.

BearCat BK-400 Rubberized Crack Seal Machine

Crack sealers are powered by diesel or propane and heat the sealant in order to dispense it into the crack, where it hardens quickly. Two of the most common filling materials are rubberized asphalt and silicone. Repair crews favor these types of sealants because they are strong enough to stand up to heavy traffic, but also flexible enough to not crack or fall apart as temperatures and weather conditions change.

    Towable vs. Walk-Behind Crack Sealers

Crack sealers are available in towable and walk-behind configurations and most commonly apply sealant through the use of gravity or hoses. Gravity crack sealers have a dispensing valve that pours filling material directly into the crack from above. These machines are efficient and well-suited for larger sealing jobs, but they may not be as accurate as a hose and wand.

Smaller cracks or more detailed work may require a hose-based crack sealer, which includes a hose and wand mechanism used for precise sealing with less waste. A pump pushes sealant through to the hose and wand, which are heated to prevent the sealant from hardening during application.

Towable and walk-behind models may employ either application method; the primary difference between them, then, is that one is towed by another vehicle while the other is pushed along the jobsite similarly to how you’d push a lawnmower. Because they don’t rely on manpower to move, towable crack sealers are often bigger and offer higher tank capacities.

One example of a towable crack sealer that uses the gravity application method is the Cimline M-Series No Pump, which has a maximum capacity of 150 or 230 gallons (568 or 870 liters), depending on the exact model, and is designed for sealing cranks in parking lots and along roads at a rate of less than 6,000 to 7,000 linear feet (1,829 to 2,134 meters) per day. SealMaster sells a range of CrackPro heated hose machines that range in capacity from 60 to 260 gal (227 to 984 l) with hose length options of 18 or 22 ft (5.5 or 6.7 m). Marathon also sells towable crack sealers, which are described as “oil jacketed melting kettles” and come in gravity and hose and wand configurations.
