    About Walk-Behind Crack Sealers

Crack sealers, which are also commonly referred to as “melters” or “melting kettles,” dispense filling material into cracks in paved surfaces to prevent water, dirt, and other debris from entering them. They are particularly important during the fall and winter when water can get into cracks during the day, freeze overnight, and then expand to widen the cracks and potentially cause more extensive damage.

Crack sealers use diesel or propane power to heat up the sealant inside the tank and then pour it into the crack where it hardens quickly. Rubberized asphalt and silicone are two of the most common filling materials, because they are strong enough to stand up to heavy traffic, but also flexible enough to expand and contract as temperatures and weather conditions change without falling apart.

    Walk-Behind vs. Towable Crack Sealers

Walk-behind crack sealers, or “wheeled melters,” are similar to lawnmowers in that the operator stands behind the machine and pushes it along while applying sealant. Towable models have wheels and feature couplers so they be hauled behind a truck or other vehicle or piece of equipment. Because walk-behind models are typically more compact with smaller tank capacities, they are ideal for smaller applications, random cracks, and contractor work.

The application method also varies from machine to machine. Gravity crack sealers, for example, have a dispensing valve that pours sealant down into the crack, making them well-suited for large sealing jobs that don’t require precision work. Hose-based crack sealers, on the other hand, feature a hose and wand where the operator can more accurately apply filling material with reduced waste. The hose/wand mechanism is heated, ensuring that the sealant doesn’t seize up during application.

One example of a walk-behind crack sealer is the Marathon KERA10, which features handlebar controls and a 3/4-inch material valve. Marathon also sells DQ- and DF-series wheeled and portable melters ranging in capacity from 8 to 60 gallons (30 to 227 liters). Another is the Crafco Mini Melter, which is available in 10- and 30-gal (38 and 114-l) configurations.

SealMaster sells a line of portable crack sealers that aren’t technically walk-behind but have 75-foot (23-meter) hoses with spray wands that make them ideal for similar applications. Specific models include the SandPup, SandPup II, and Porta-Pump, which can be used with an air compressor you already own.
