Swiss construction and infrastructure specialist Implenia has purchased two new Dynapac CA5000D Seismic articulated soil compactors to assist it in the construction of a 1.9-mile (3.1-kilometer)-long train tunnel along the west coast of Sweden. The contractor made use of the smooth-drum compactors’ Dynapac Seismic vibration-to-ground control feature, Dyn@Link fleet monitoring solution, and Dyn@Lyzer cloud-based compaction control system to attack the project efficiently.

The 5-mi (8-km) expansion of the West Coast Railway line between the cities of Varberg and Hamra was commissioned by the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket). The 328-million-euro project includes the tunnel under Varberg, which will allow the city to remove the existing above-ground track and railyard and then reclaim desirable waterfront property. The new double-track expansion is expected to be completed in 2024.

Implenia used its new CA5000D Seismic compactors’ Dynapac Compaction Meter and Dyn@Lyzer feature to control their operation and document the results. Dyn@Lyzer uses the GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) to verify coverage with 0.39- or 3.9-inch (10- or 100-millimeter) positioning accuracy.

“In using the Dyn@Lyzer, we have been able to achieve several key project benefits,” says Implenia Head of Production Earthworks (South), Peter Claesson. “The first has been to collect data that gives us a complete view of compaction levels achieved across the project, as this information is recorded at each pass.”

The project’s noise emissions and vibrations needed to be kept under control in the urban setting. The CA5000Ds’ Dynapac Seismic technology addressed this concern while reducing component stress and saving fuel by up to 10%.

“With the use of Seismic, noise reduction and decreased environmental impact have eased the impact on local residents,” says Claesson. “Fuel savings thanks to the Seismic system have also been significant.”

    The Dynapac CA5000D

The Dynapac CA5000D has an operating mass of 35,700 pounds (16,193 kilograms) with a cab. Its 60-in. (1,524-mm)-diameter drum provides a compaction width of 84 in. (2,134 mm). The thick shell of the drum contributes to the balance between vibrating and static mass and the compactor’s high static linear load of 280 pounds per inch (49,035 newton-meters). The CA5000D uses Dynapac’s Active Bouncing Control to prevent double-jump and bounce. Its cartridge-style, efficient eccentrics conserve up to 50% of the energy at the start of vibration, the manufacturer says.

The 200-horsepower (149-kilowatt) compactor utilizes hydrostatic drive, vibration, steering, and service brakes, and can operate at 2 to 7 mph (3.2 to 11.3 km/h). Its engine complies with Tier 4 Final/EU Stage V emissions regulations. An Eco mode can extend its fuel economy.

Dynapac says the CA5000D is built for high productivity, compaction quality, maximal uptime, low carbon and noise emissions, and low cost of ownership. Its entire operator station—including the adjustable seat, steering wheel, and instrumentation—swivels 180 degrees for driver comfort when traveling backward as well as forward. The CA5000D features LED reverse lights and work lights. A High Climb version of the compactor comes with a 55% gradeability rating in either direction.
