Located in Houghton Bay on the South Coast of Wellington, New Zealand, Hungerford Road allows people to drive from scenic View Road down to Houghton Bay Road and the Moai Statue in Lyall Bay. And while the steep incline makes for outstanding views, the slope of the hills (which include angles up to 22 degrees) make resurfacing the road a challenge. KRN Surfacing Ltd took on the tough job and was able to resurface the entire road in just a week using Dynapac’s SD2500CS large tracked paver and a Dynapac Combi roller.

    Paving With The SD2500CS

With a working width from 8.4 to 33 feet (2.55 to 10 meters), the SD2500CS offers a paving capacity of 882 tons (800 metric tons) per hour and paves up to 12.2 inches (31 centimeters) thick. The large tracked paver also boasts high-performance features for optimal results in difficult projects like the sloping Hungerford Road. The PaveManager 2.0 control system can automatically program the slop and crowning of the paving distance, and screed operators can both monitor and control both screed sides using the software’s remote control capability. Advanced load and unload functions also help maintain the desired paving level.

“The Dynapac paver is absolutely phenomenal,” says KRN Road Surfacing Ltd Director Robert Storey. “It is definitely in a league above the others! We were all very surprised that the Dynapac paver could handle the steep hill with no problems.”

    Combi Rollers

Dynapac’s Combi roller series provide compaction widths from 42 to 54 in. (106 to 137 cm) and operating weights from 4,900 to 8,600 pounds (2,222 to 3,900 kilograms). Instead of a drum at the rear of the unit, all Combi rollers feature four rubber tyres driven in pairs to minimise the risk of damaging newly laid asphalt when the roller needs to make a sharp turn. Dynapac says the rubber wheels also produce a denser and smoother asphalt surface.
