Dynapac CC900 e Compactor & SD1800W e Paver Contribute To Zero-Emissions Amsterdam Highway Project
Dutch construction company Van Gelder, a major infrastructure builder in the Netherlands, recently applied a pair of new battery-electric machines from Dynapac to a novel zero-emissions project in the Amsterdam area. Dynapac’s CC900 e small tandem vibratory roller and SD1800W e electric city paver, both supplied by dealer Van der Spek of Vianen, helped demonstrate the capabilities of emissions-free equipment on a road reconstruction site.
Same Performance, Only Quieter
Van Gelder was hired to repair the lane and cycle tracks on the N232 motorway near Schiphol. Completing the construction project with zero-emissions equipment was a first not only in the Netherlands, but also worldwide, according to Project Manager Sander van Domselaar. "This is a fantastic development that we can show here and we are very proud of that," he says. "We did some tests first and then went into real asphalt paving. It just went the way it's supposed to go."
Another benefit of the electric Dynapac duo was their low operating noise level. "Working with these special machines was otherwise not very different from working with conventional construction machines,” says Van Domselaar.
“The only thing that had to be taken into account was charging the paver at midday,” he notes. “We solved that with a mobile 500-kilowatt-hour battery system that was supplied to the jobsite." Van Domselaar says he is convinced that developments such as the Dynapac CC900 e compactor and SD1800W e paver will allow Van Gelder to achieve carbon neutrality beginning in 2025.
The Dynapac CC900 e Roller
The battery-electric Dynapac CC900 e smooth-drum compactor uses a 15-kWh lithium-ion battery that provides eight hours’ worth of work on a charge. It powers a 10-kilowatt (13.4-horsepower) electric motor for steering and the two rollers’ drive system, as well as an 8.5-kW (11.5-HP) motor for vibration in both drums. The drive motors being connected in series helps the CC900 e climb hills, as does the sizable 23-inch (584-millimeter) drum diameter.
The CC900 e has a drum/compaction width of 35.4 in. (900 mm) and a static linear load of 51.5 pounds per inch (9.2 kilograms per centimeter) in front and 53.8 lbs/in. (9.6 kg/cm) in the rear. The roller’s operating weight is 3,726 lbs (1,690 kg) including its rollover protection system (ROPS).
Dynapac recommends the CC900 e for use on bike paths and smaller parking lot and road projects. It supports the Dyn@Link fleet management system.
The Dynapac SD1800W e Paver
The SD1800W e city paver’s water-cooled, 98-kWh lithium-ion battery pack can be fully recharged in an hour with a 700-volt fast charging system. Its electric motor directly drives its efficient hydraulic system without an intervening transmission.
The diesel version of the SD1800W uses a 74.3-HP (55-kW), EU Stage V Deutz engine. It weighs 22,708 lbs (10,300 kg) with its standard screed. The SD1800W has a basic paving width of 5.9 feet (1.8 meters) and a maximum width of 15.4 ft (4.7 m). It can pave up to 386 tons per hour (350 metric tons per hour).
