Superior Paving Corporation recently undertook a major paving project on Interstate 95 in Virginia. The company deployed the Dynapac CC2200 VI smooth drum compactor with seismic technology to the job, representing one of the rigorous tests the asphalt roller has completed throughout Europe and the United States.

"We're doing the base asphalt layer on Interstate 95, which runs from Florida to Maine,” says Superior Paving roller operator Michael Washington. “The highway has been undergoing significant widening in Virginia to accommodate increasing traffic, especially toward Washington, D.C. The CC2200 VI roller with seismic technology has been crucial for the final compaction of the base, intermediate, and topping layers. Its variable compaction mechanism ensures the right amount of compaction with minimal passes."

    About The Dynapac CC2200 VI

The 7.6-ton (6.9-metric-ton) CC2200 VI has a 59-inch (1,500-millimeter) drum for finish rolling and is powered by a Tier 4 Final-compliant diesel engine with a high torque setting and an Eco Mode for increased fuel efficiency. The asphalt roller’s seismic technology optimizes compaction, reduces fuel consumption, and increases operator comfort.

"The seismic technology allows us to achieve consistent density across the mat, even close to the edges, which is usually challenging," says Evan Pugh, a density tech QA at Superior Paving.

The CC2200 VI’s tandem rollers have a shell thickness of 0.8 in. (20 mm) and are designed to offer efficiency in application, compaction control, and service. The user-friendly asphalt roller lets the operator select either the high or low amplitude setting, and the roller does the rest, allowing the operator to focus on navigation rather than inputs.

"We've conducted extensive tests to ensure its performance in various conditions,” says Andreas Persson, a lead engineer within applications for Dynapac. “This adaptability is crucial for different contractors working on diverse jobsites around the globe. So far, the machine has performed well and achieved the desired compaction levels across the board."
