    About Self-Propelled Concrete Mixers

Self-propelled concrete mixers, also known as “transit mixers,” or simply “concrete mixing trucks” or “cement trucks,” are some of the largest concrete mixers and come in two main types, drum and volumetric. As with other concrete mixer varieties such as walk-behind, towable, and stationary, self-propelled concrete mixers use a rotating drum, paddles, or an auger to uniformly combine aggregate, water, and cement to form concrete.

    Features

    McNeilus Bridgemaster Self-Propelled Concrete Mixer

Drum mixers haul a set volume of concrete that is either mixed in transit or delivered from a central mixing plant. Volumetric mixers haul each component—sand, cement powder, aggregates, and water— in separate compartments to mix the concrete at the application site where the operator can select precise amounts of each material for a custom blend. To mix the concrete and to prevent it from hardening, a large motor rotates the drum on the truck body while a series of blades inside the drum keep the cement, aggregate, and water in constant motion. These machines are also equipped with either a rear chute or front discharge to pour out the concrete, and often have a capacity in the neighborhood of 11 cubic yards. They are often used in large-scale construction projects like foundations, slabs, walls, bridges, dams, roadways, or airports.
