    About Concrete Pavers

Concrete pavers lay concrete at various widths to create highways, roads, and other surfaces. This larger category includes several types of machines, with the two most popular being slipform pavers and curb and gutter machines. In road construction, for example, a concrete mixer truck or material transfer vehicle drops concrete in front of the paver, which then lays it at the desired width and smooths it out with the machine’s screed. Once the paver finishes laying the concrete, other equipment, including rollers, follow to finish the job, compact the material, and ensure a smooth, level surface.

    Concrete Paver Types

Most if not all slipform pavers are track models and are ideal for laying roads, parking lots, and other, similar surfaces. While some are designed to lay a standard 12-foot (3.7-meter) highway lane, or even smaller surfaces, there are some models from GOMACO, for example, that can pave at widths of up to 50 feet (15.2 meters). The company also manufactures machines that can achieve paving depths of up to 19 inches (48.3 centimeters). Slipform pavers primarily lay formless concrete surfaces, meaning flat with no purposeful bumps or raised ridges, but some can automatically adjust their width or grade to account for varied terrain.

Curb and gutter machines, on the other hand, are available with tracks or with wheels and come in a wide range of sizes. Where slipform pavers are ideal for laying out flat surfaces, curb and gutter models live up to their name by laying curbs and gutters as well as concrete walls, sidewalks, and more. While many such pavers require an operator to control them from a seat or work platform, others feature remote control technology that allows one worker to operate the machine and make sure it’s laying concrete properly, all while maintaining a safe distance.

Another type of machine in this category is a form-riding paver, which is similar to a slipform, but rides on a metal track instead of tracks or wheels. Form-riding pavers are well-suited for a wide range of applications from residential streets to runways. Other types include triple- and quad-tube roller pavers, canal (or slope) pavers, and more. Terex Bid-Well, for example, has a paver that can create trapezoidal canals or slopes at angles up to 45 degrees.
