    About Material Transfer Vehicles

Paving operations use material transfer vehicles, or MTVs to shuttle hot mix asphalt (HMA) from trucks to the paver. MTVs are available in wheeled or track configurations, making them ideal for highway and interstate paving as well as for working on uneven and challenging terrain. Common uses for MTVs include replacing some asphalt-hauling trucks entirely and complementing them during surges.

For example, if a bottom- or end-dump truck drops off a load of asphalt in front of the paver but still has some material left over, it can drop that into an MTV and then head back to the plant for a refill. The MTV maintains the temperature of the asphalt, prevents material segregation, and then delivers it when the paver is ready for more. This maximizes efficiency by reducing downtime between truckloads and ensuring continuous paving.

    Types Of Material Transfer Vehicles

The two most common types of material transfer vehicles are windrow elevator and remixing models. Windrow elevators handle the give-and-take nature of paving by filling the paver’s hopper to prevent it from running out of asphalt, and by taking on extra asphalt to prevent overfilling. Remixing models feature augers that can actually mix the asphalt again while delivering it to the paver to keep materials from separating.

Some of the most popular MTVs come from the Roadtec Shuttle Buggy product line, featuring models that can hold between 10 and 35 tons (9 to 31.8 metric tons) of asphalt. One of the hallmarks of the Shuttle Buggy is the triple-pitch auger at the bottom of the hopper. This system pulls materials from throughout the hopper and mixes it together to regulate its temperature and create a uniform paving material. Once the material exits the bottom of the hopper, a conveyor transfers it to a discharge conveyor that delivers it to the paver.
