One use for MTVs is to hold leftover material from an end- or bottom-dump truck so it can drive back to the plant to fill up on asphalt and then return to the construction site. MTVs maintain the temperature of the asphalt and prevent it from separating. They can then deliver the material to the paver in between truckloads as needed to minimize downtime and ensure continuous paving.

Differentiation

Material transfer vehicles are available in track or wheel configurations. Track MTVs are ideal for shuttling asphalt over uneven and challenging terrain, making it possible to create paved surfaces almost anywhere. Wheel MTVs, on the other hand, are most at home on traditional road construction and paving jobsites with a relatively flat path between the truck and the paver.

The MTV category also breaks down into windrow elevator and remixing subcategories. Windrow elevators ensure that the paver’s hopper is never empty or overfilled by refilling it or taking on extra asphalt as needed. Remixing MTVs are similar but come equipped with augers that mix the asphalt again before dispensing it into the hopper to maintain a more uniform product.
