    About Asphalt Pavers

New and used compact, midsize, and heavy-duty asphalt pavers are key construction equipment for small to large paving operations. The self-propelled machines lay down, spread, and compact asphalt to help pave walkways, golf course cart paths, airport runways, parking lots, and everything from private driveways to four-lane interstates.

Available in wheel and tracked models, asphalt pavers feature two main pieces: the tractor and a floating screed. The former drives the machine forward and includes the engine, augers, conveyors, hopper, push rollers, material transport system, operator seats, and other components. The screed is situated behind the tractor, and uses plates, leveling arms, sensors, and other parts to level the asphalt surface.

    Asphalt Paver History

Asphalt paving in general reportedly dates to the early 1800s in Scotland when a local engineer created his own mix to pave a road. Early on, rakes and other manual tools helped spread the material. Harry Barber of Barber-Greene Co., maker of bucket loaders and conveyors, however, developed the first mechanical, self-propelled asphalt paver in the early 1930s. His design, still influential in modern paver manufacturing, resulted in an initial production release and patent by decade’s end.

    Asphalt Paver Features

Also referred to as asphalt finishers, modern asphalt pavers feature more powerful but quieter Tier IV diesel engines, many supporting eco-friendly modes and various technologies that enhance fuel consumption efficiency. Besides providing large-capacity hoppers, four-wheel and all-wheel-drive performance, hydraulic screed extensions, road lights, fume-management systems, and dual independent operator stations, today’s machines also feature greater integration of electronic controls, sensors, and automation. The latter has led to sensor-based, auto-material feeding systems, as well as auto-sloping and grading abilities, touchscreen displays that provide real-time job data and adjustment control, support for manufacturers’ telematics solutions, and other advancements.
