    About Wheel Material Transfer Vehicles

Material transfer vehicles, or MTVs, are crucial for road construction and paving operations because they are agile machines used to shuttle hot mix asphalt (HMA) from end- or bottom-dump trucks to the paver. In some instances, they can replace some of those asphalt-hauling trucks entirely, but they often serve as a middleman that complements other, larger trucks during surges.

This can be especially handy when, for example, a dump truck refills the paver’s hopper but still has leftover asphalt. Rather than flushing out the extra material and wasting it or having to stand by and wait until the paver can accommodate the asphalt, the truck can dump it into an MTV. The MTV can then maintain the asphalt’s temperature and prevent material segregation, and can refill the paver as needed, while the truck returns to the HMA plant for a refill. This helps to maintain continuous paving, cutting job completion times and making more efficient use of all of a paving crew’s resources.

Wheel vs. Track Material Transfer Vehicles

Material transfer vehicles come in wheel or track configurations. Wheel MTVs are ideal for road construction and paving jobs performed in urban areas or on relatively flat terrain, whereas track-equipped MTVs are better-suited for operating on uneven and difficult terrain, making it possible to pave almost anywhere.

MTVs also break down into windrow elevator and remixing subcategories. Windrow elevators ensure that the paver’s hopper is never empty or overfilled by refilling it or taking on extra asphalt as needed. Remixing MTVs are similar but come equipped with augers that mix the asphalt again before dispensing it into the hopper to maintain a more uniform product.

Find The Right Wheel Material Transfer Vehicle

PavingEquipment.com has a large selection of new and used material transfer vehicles for sale, including popular models from Roadtec’s Shuttle Buggy range. Shuttle Buggy MTVs range in capacity from 10 to 35 tons (9 to 31.8 metric tons) and feature triple pitch augers at the bottom of the hopper that perform very thorough mixing of material throughout, maintaining optimal temperature and preventing separation until the HMA can be conveyed to the paver.
