    About Track Asphalt Pavers

The first mechanical, self-propelled asphalt paver dates to the early 1930s, and since then, these machines have helped pave the world’s roads and interstates, airport runways, parking lots, driveways, and other surfaces.

    Caterpillar AP555F Track Asphalt Paver

Like modern compact, midsize, and heavy-duty wheel asphalt pavers, track models consist mainly of a tractor and floating screed. With its engine, conveyors, hopper, augers, rollers, material transport system, and other components, the tractor powers the paver forward while it lays down and spreads the asphalt. The screed is positioned behind the tractor and uses plates, sensors, leveling arms, and other parts to help compact and level the surface.

Track vs. Wheel Asphalt Paver Considerations

Wheel asphalt pavers tend to offer superior mobility on and between jobsites, but track asphalt pavers offer superior traction. They are generally more expensive than their wheeled counterparts, but also tend to provide more power and the best flotation ability on soft sub-bases and other surfaces due to more even weight distribution. This translates to enhanced operator comfort and increased stability, efficiency, and consistency while paving on inclines and across wide widths. Many manufacturers build proprietary track systems into their pavers. Caterpillar, for example, offers a Mobil-Trac undercarriage that uses rubber-coated tracks along with self-tensioning accumulators, center guide blocks, and other features.

    Track Asphalt Paver Features

Along with more powerful, fuel-efficient Tier IV diesel engines, modern track asphalt pavers incorporate sensors, cameras, and other technologies to provide automated guidance, measurement, leveling, slope control, material feeding systems, and more. Current models may also variously feature larger hoppers, hydraulic screen extensions, work lights, fume-management systems, touchscreen displays, onboard diagnostics, and support for telematics solutions.
